Programme: Liszt: 19 (Complete) Hungarian Rhapsodies

The anniversary of György Cziffra’s birth is an outstanding event not only for Hungarian but also for European music history, and it is no wonder that this is the opening event and one of the highlights of the Cziffra Festival’s jubilee programmes in Budapest. It is a point of departure to which the admirers of the legendary pianist – the artists who work in his spirit and the public – can always return. As usual, Kossuth Prize-winning pianist János Balázs is preparing for this evening with a special performance: all nineteen of Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsodies. The concert is an excellent opportunity to gain a comprehensive insight into the Liszt oeuvre which served as a serious guide for György Cziffra, as the pieces, representing the high school of the piano, represent the composer’s creative periods, spanning some five decades, and blend the sometimes contradictory aspects of romantic virtuosity, folk music motifs and far-reachingly precise musical instructions.
The Cziffra Festival awards will be presented at the beginning of the concert.
